Background & Information

Have you seen them in the MRT?
Singapore Arts Festival (SAF)
What is SAF? Have you seen their advertisements around in the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT)  (as seen in the picture above) or anywhere else in Singapore? For some who travel a lot locally, you would have known or notice the existence of this event. But for those uninitiated foreigners or Singaporeans, it is a yearly local festival that celebrates the local arts in various forms; visual art, music, dance, film, stories of myths & legends etc.. The event also takes place in the middle of the year when school vacation starts to get afoot. Do not just perceive this as another boring festival with just cultural activities and elements. There is more to it!

Background
SAF has gone through 34 years of developing the artistic and cultural life in Singapore through the festivals. Traditionally, it gathers international celebrities and local artists annually for a remembrance of cultural diversity and artistic innovation. The outcome objective of this festival is making it into one of Asia’s foremost cultural underlying moments. Over the years, it achieved the increasing number for public demand for the arts, culture and events. This shows that the public are able to accept and appreciate the arts and culture of Singapore.

Moving on to the 35th year, SAF 2012 theme is called “Our Lost Poems”. The festival is committed into innovation thus executing the three themes all in all from the previous year, from the other two themes “Between You and Me” in 2010 and “I Want To Remember” in 2011.

The theme, “Our Lost Poems”, incorporates myths, legends, wandering thoughts, reflections, lost riddles and hidden stories. It uncovers stories that people have not heard before or need to be retold so that they can remembered.
I will be going to the event to volunteer for the Kids Arts Festival. After going for the training, I was very excited for the actual event to start. I was very curious to find out who the audience would be. We will find out more as you read on.
